The oil and gas field in the Beibu Gulf of China has achieved high-yield oil and gas flows, marking a significant breakthrough in oil and gas exploration in the Beibu Gulf.

On March 6, reporters learned from CNOOC (China National Offshore Oil Corporation) that an oil and gas field in the Beibu Gulf of China has achieved high-yield oil and gas flows, marking a major breakthrough in oil and gas exploration in the Beibu Gulf.

The recent exploration discovery in the Beibu Gulf Basin will contribute to ensuring the stable supply of China's oil and gas resources.

Recently, significant breakthroughs have been made in oil and gas exploration in the Beibu Gulf area of China. The Weizhou 10-5 oil and gas field has achieved high-yield oil and gas flow, becoming the first granite buried hill oil and gas discovery in the Beibu Gulf Basin, which is of great significance for ensuring national energy security. The following are key developments and impacts:

一、Core Achievements in Exploration

The Weizhou 10-5 oil and gas field has achieved a daily test production of approximately 370,000 cubic meters of natural gas and 102 tons of crude oil. The exploratory well encountered an oil and gas reservoir with a thickness of 283 meters, and the total drilling depth reached about 4,840 meters.

Geographical Location and Conditions‌

Located in the Beibu Gulf of the South China Sea, approximately 75 kilometers from Beihai City, Guangxi Province, with an average water depth of about 37 meters.

Breakthrough in Exploration

This marks the first oil and gas discovery in the granite buried hill formations of the Beibu Gulf Basin, opening up a new frontier for exploration in the Paleozoic buried hill systems.

二、Technical Breakthroughs and Difficulties Overcoming

Complex geological challenges‌

Granite buried hill exploration faces issues such as complex hydrocarbon accumulation mechanisms and unclear distribution of rock layers.

Application of Key Technologies

The research team has clarified the distribution patterns of granite through techniques such as structural analysis and seismic inversion. By integrating geophysical predictions, they identified reservoir development zones and innovated drilling techniques to achieve reservoir protection.

Optimization of Exploration Strategy‌

In response to the increasing difficulty of discovering large-scale oil and gas fields in the Weixi'nan Sag (a hydrocarbon-rich area) of the Beibu Gulf Basin after nearly 40 years of development, CNOOC has focused on drilling near the fault zones in the sag, aiming to establish buried hills as a new growth point for reserves.

三、Strategic Significance and Impact

Ensuring Energy Supply‌

This discovery provides new support for the stable supply of oil and gas resources in China, particularly against the backdrop of increasing challenges in the development of large-scale oil and gas fields.

Promoting Industrial Development

This breakthrough signifies the opening of a new frontier for the offshore oil industry, accumulating valuable experience for future deepwater and complex geological exploration.

Deepening Theoretical Research

The research achievements in the theory of complex buried hill reservoirs and their supporting technologies will further guide the exploration practices of buried hill oil and gas in China's maritime areas.
Currently, CNOOC is actively advancing exploration and development in related regions. This breakthrough injects new momentum into national energy security and the exploitation of marine resources.
